Improving the quality of diagnostics and treatment

Researchers

In addition to giving treatment, Accare is involved in scientific research in the area of child and youth psychiatry. This research is mainly carried out at the UCKJP Division (Child and Youth Psychiatric Division of the University Centre).

One of the subjects we research is which forms of treatment are the most effective for certain psychiatric disorders. Our publications appear in scientific magazines and journals.

Research improves the quality of diagnostics

In many cases we work together with scientists from other institutes, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Research allows Accare to contribute to the continuous improvement of psychiatric care provided to children and adolescents. Many of Accare's employees are actively involved in research, most of them working at the UCKJP Division in Groningen. Because of their contacts in scientific circles, Accare is kept well informed of the latest forms of treatment in child and youth psychiatry. This often enables us to offer adequate treatment, even in cases presenting complex problems.

How is the patient affected by this research?

Many patients who are registered with Accare are requested to join one or several research projects: immediately upon registration, during the diagnostic intake or later, for example before starting or after completing treatment. It usually involves filling in questionnaires, consenting to an interview or doing tests at the computer. For some types of research a blood sample or a sample of mucous membrane from the inside of the cheek is taken. In some cases, participation is required once only, but we regularly ask patients to come in several times.
Prior to each study both patients and their parents are given detailed information about the purpose and the procedure of the research. Participation in scientific research is always voluntary. If the results of treatment are used for research or publication, they are always fully anonymous and unidentifiable.
We are aware of the fact that participating in research can be quite a burden for patients and their parents/carers. Nevertheless, participation in research projects is essential for the progress of scientific research and, in the end, for the quality of clinical care.
